| Confused |
[Jul. 16th, 2008|05:02 pm] |
The past few weeks have been rather confusing. And how do I deal with it? Last minute travel...
I'll be in Portland 7/31-8/4, with no plans. Dan says I'll be there for Red Bull Flutag...
I may also go to San Francisco or Los Angeles this weekend. I'll see how I feel tomorrow evening... |

Kohlarabi is quite tasty. We should all be eating more Sputnik-shaped vegetables. |

| | KEXP | ] | Last night I went to see a bout of the Charm City Roller Girls. It was fun... one friend encouraged us to go, and then ran into another group of friends...
One word of advice. This warning should not be taken lightly:

See the 1 inch round piece of foam? Yeah, that was pretty much the entire "barrier" between us and the dozen or so girls who plowed into us at high speed...
As a side note Mary of Charm City Cakes (Ace of Cakes on FoodTV) was handing out programs. |

| Fortran |
[Mar. 9th, 2007|12:05 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | tired | ] | I thought I had come to terms with Fortran. I can read most code these days without difficulty. Yet, somehow, I never had the joy of experiencing this, until today that is:
10000 read (plti,end=10040) jday,((c1(b,ac(jc)),b=1,nb),jc=1,nac)
Nested implicit do loops are not your friendly. Doubly so when they are being used to access a multi-dimensional array. It took me a long time to recognize what was going on. |

| Via Nancy D'Alesandro Pelosi |
[Jan. 5th, 2007|10:50 pm] |
I don't go to political events often, yet the naming of a street in Baltimore for Nancy Pelosi caught my fancy, primarily because of how rarely you find the union of San Francisco and Baltimore.
Most of the Maryland Democratic Party was on stage with Pelosi: All of our congressmen, including the young John Sarbanes who was easily seen wandering through the crowd before the event, our senators (including the recently retired Paul Sarbanes), half of the city council, and of course, Mayor & Gov-Elect Martin O'Malley. Pelosi's entire family was there (including her brother, former mayor of Baltimore and MC).

Despite her stature, Senator Barbara Mikulski was not to be missed. I am fairly sure she was what drew ridetheworld to meet me at the event.

I failed to give much notice to the pin Senator Mikushe was wearing at the time:
"A Woman's Place is in the House... As Speaker!"
Well said. |

Yet another food-related post... Laura's visit to Baltimore resulted in Chile Chilaquiles. As a precursor, rugbykate's tasty fresh salsa was devoured with the fresh Tortilleria chips. Fortunately, Laura picked up another bag which did an excellent job absorbing the green chile.

My only real contribution to this meal was a side project to figure out how to make watermelon agua fresca:

Success? I think so. |

| Cooking Post |
[Aug. 1st, 2006|10:08 am] |
I've been tempted to start recording some of my cooking adventures, most of which come out well, but on occasion I still manage an impressive flop. Here are the adventures from this week:
This weeks adventure was inspired by the fruit selection at the farmer's market...

A blueberry-peach (the small "jupiter" or "donut" peaches) galette. The crust came from Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, although I think of over mixed it, as it wasn't as flakey as I had hoped.
On Monday the left over blueberries were combined with lots of butter to turn into a topping for French Toast made from New System Bakery cinnamon bread. Mmm. |

| Vote NO on Nancy Pyle and Cindy Chavez |
[Apr. 6th, 2006|01:47 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | annoyed | ] | I lived in San Jose for 8 months of 2003.
That didn't stop current city councilwoman Nancy Pyle from sending me spam, on behalf of fellow city councilwoman and mayoral candidate Cindy Chavez.
So, if you are living in San Jose, in future elections, please vote for any candidate except these two. In a such a tech-savvy region, there is no reason any representive should be sending unsolicited e-mail to anything except an opt-in mailing list of supporters.
Thanks. |

| Nerdom |
[Apr. 4th, 2006|10:38 pm] |
A whole new level of nerdom, even for me. Tonight was the inaugural run of my garden railway...
Watch it now!
I will probably post way too many pictures of the progress in the garden as the Spring goes on (projects: lots of planting, waterfall for the pond, back porch, fence, etc.). You have been warned! |

| Train Post |
[Mar. 19th, 2006|10:19 am] |
| [ | mood |
| | peaceful | ] | I on the train, near Centralia, WA headed up to Seattle, watching Walk the Line.
Amtrak seems to do things "right" out here, significantly cheaper than the Northeast trains, with the ability to check bicycles, and movies on board... I also like the heavy use of the old Amtrak logo at all of the stations. |

I have finally caught up with 'real time', well, at least today's-date-10-years-ago, on my ImageWriter Blog.
So far, its been a fun, stress-relieving, project. I have been making an attempt to reach people who have sent me the messages, with very positive feed back from everyone I have reached. I may have to set up another blog with the responses. :P |

| | KEXP - John in the Morning | ] | I just printed out my boarding pass for tomorrow morning. I'm headed to California (Berkeley, San Francisco, Santa Cruz).
This was going to be the first MacWorld that I would miss in fifteen years, but the Southwest 3-day advance ticket sale wooed me. |

[Jan. 5th, 2006|09:22 am] |
Is it considered nerdy to stream Internet radio while flying on an airplane?
Copenhagen (CPH) to Washington (IAD) Depart: January 5 2006 at 12:20 (local time) Arrive: January 5 2006 at 15:15 (local time)
Then, renting a car, and driving to Baltimore.
I am still missing one bag from last week, but rumor has it that they will deliver it directly to B'more. |
